Update on the Ministries in India and Myanmar : November 2016

Escalating persecution in India

11/02/2016 Washington, D.C. (International Christian Concern) – International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that four Christians, including an elderly couple and a pregnant woman, were brutally beaten by alleged Hindu radicals in the Bastar District of India’s Chhattisgarh State. Due to injuries sustained during the attack, a 60-year-old Christian man died.

The attack took place on October 8 in Kuther village, located in the Bastar District. According to local Christians contacted by ICC, individuals, suspected by locals to be Hindu radicals, broke into the home of Sularam Kashyap and his pregnant wife, Sudri, and severely beat the Christian couple along with Sularam’s elderly parents. As a result of the attack, all four Christians were hospitalized at the Government District Hospital of Jagdalpur.

While in the hospital, the Christian family was visited by an aid worker who attempted to record the family’s testimony on video. This reportedly upset police from the Lahundiguda Police Station, who ordered the Christian family to leave the hospital and return home on October 15. Due to the severity of his injuries and the lack of proper medical treatment, Sukru Kashyap, Sularam’s 60-year-old father, died at home on October 31.

According to local Christians, the family was attacked because they refused to denounce their Christian faith.  In June 2014, more than 50 villages in the Bastar District, including Kuther, passed resolutions effectively banning the practice of non-Hindu faiths, which the Chhattisgarh High Court later ruled to be unconstitutional. Since June 2014, Hindu radicals have assaulted, threatened, and organized social boycotts against Christians living in the Bastar District, using the debunked resolutions to justify their actions.

As a part of the social boycott against Christians in Kuther village, local Hindus blocked Sularam from burying his father in the village’s graveyard on October 31. On November 1, Sularam was able to bury his father in the village graveyard, but only after police intervention.

William Stark, ICC’s Regional Manager, said, “The persecution of Christians in the Bastar District continues to shock the conscience. Assaults and threats have become almost commonplace over the past two years.  In many villages where social boycotts are taking place, Christians are not allowed to collect water from village wells, cultivate their fields, or engage in commerce. They are fined if they talk to a Hindu and are even barred from burying their dead. This siege-like persecution has one purpose: to drive out Christianity. It’s shocking that this situation has been allowed to continue, especially since Article 25 of India’s constitution provides full religious freedom to its citizens. Without enforcement, the right this article enshrines is simply words on paper.”

Please pray for our Brethren in India who face this kind of persecution. Pray for them to stand strong; to be bold in their witness and even to death to proclaim that Jesus is Lord. Thank you for praying and for supporting this ministry.

Update on the Ministries in India and Myanmar : October 2016

Tamil Nadu Church Planters’ fellowship

dedication-1

The church planters in the state of Tamil Nadu try to get together on a regular basis for updates, prayer, encouragement, and strategy regarding church planting.  Not everyone is in the picture above. From left to right are Brothers Samuel, Alfred, Stephen, Vellusamy and David.

Some have asked about the Bible study Brother Moses is holding at the campus. That Bible study is going well.  Currently, there are 12 men and women who attend.  Also, he has been meeting with 8 children and has contact with their parents. Pray for the salvation of souls and worship services coming out of this Bible study.

You may also remember a young man by the name of Vijaykumar. He came to know the Lord at Agape Home and was baptized in 2015. Then, he began helping the other boys at Agape Home and teaching them the Bible.  Believing that God is calling him into full-time service, Vijay is now attending a Bible College in the area. Pray for him that God will prepare him to be a part of the church planting team in India.

Recently, in the city of Coimbatore where Brother Paul Rajan and his family live, a Hindu leader was assassinated. As a result, Hindus demonstrated in the streets, damaged church buildings and mosques, and blamed the Christian community for his death. Though things have calmed down now, this underlines the potentially explosive climate in which our Brethren serve the Lord. Pray that they will be as wise as serpents and as harmless as doves while they continue to reach out to unbelievers with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Our next scheduled trip to India is in May 2017. Pastor Jeff Pennington (Galion, Ohio GBC), Pastor Ike Graham, Johnathan Steiner, Grace Steiner (Orrville, Ohio GBC) and Abby Pearson (Peru, IN GBC) are planning to make the trip and minister to our Brethren there. Pray for an effective ministry, the opportunity to hear first-hand how the work is going, and for safety and health.

Prior to the trip to India in May 2017, Pastor Ike and Pastor Bryan Maley (Alto, MI GBC) have been invited to return to Myanmar and teach the Bible. This trip is also designed to help the Brethren practice the ordinances of the CGBCI statement of faith which they have recently adopted as their own.

Update on the Ministries in India and Myanmar : September 2016

A house church in Umerkote, Odisha

September 2016Persecution against Christians in India continues to rise. International Christian Concern reports: Christians in northern Telangana state are under assault as ultra-Hindu nationalists groups are unleashing a fresh dose of violence on the community. Groups like the RSS, VHP and Bajrangdal have attacked pastors and churches, leading to hospitalizations and widespread fear.  Meanwhile, the perpetrators continue to enjoy total impunity as they go unpunished for their crimes.

Our Brethren in Odisha also report that activist Hindus continue to harass, threaten them and disrupt worship and evangelism. In Umerkote, believers in the village of Adhikariguda are being harassed by Hindu people. They have targeted a sister and her family because she became a believer and have ostracized them from the community. In Golamunda, Peter asks us to pray for Dambo Samaj because he is the leader of the persecution they are facing in that area.

A note of praise is that the government has allowed the orphan ministry at Agape Home to continue. So far, all the government requirements have been met. Also, one of the boys, Christopher, has completed his vocational training in electrical engineering. He is now working for a Motor company about 6 miles from Agape Home.  However, he still lives at Agape Home and is now serving there as a volunteer to help the other boys.

One of the newest church plants up in the mountains outside Coimbatore (Sathyamanagalam) is seeing 15-20 attend worship on Sundays. Pray for the growth and spiritual stability of these believers and, of course, all believers to be grounded solidly in the faith in order to persevere under trials; including the persecution. Pray that they will bear a good testimony “knowing that they have a better possession and a lasting one…and not throw away their confidence which has a great reward…so that when they have done the will of God, they may receive what was promised” (Hebrews 10:34-36).

Our next scheduled visit to India is May 2017. Please pray for the formation of the team that is to go and for good preparation of the team in order that we might help to strengthen and encourage our Brethren there.

Update on the Ministries in India and Myanmar : August 2016

In the mountains of Sathyamanagalam

Joy (8076)

In 2015, we met, for the first time, Brethren from the mountain areas outside of Coimbatore. Two of the elders of this group attended the Conference in Coimbatore that year and then decided to officially join CGBCIndia.

Last month on July 3rd, these Brethren observed threefold communion. Brother Stephen is leading this group and they have already reached into neighboring villages. Some in one village are participating in a Bible study there and the plan is to begin a church with those who come to Christ through the Bible study. Please pray for this outreach effort.

Brother Paul joined the Brethren in Sathymanagalam on July 3rd for their threefold communion service. He reports that more of the believers there have been baptized by trine immersion.

Joshua (3063)

As you may remember from last month’s update, the Foreign Mission Panel endorsed a written plan for a joint partnership between the CGBCI and the churches of the Southern Chin Brethren Fellowship in Myanmar. The purpose is to plant churches among tribal people groups in the country of Myanmar. The written plan also includes that pastors Ike Graham and Bryan Maley return to Myanmar in January to teach trine immersion and threefold communion while at the same time demonstrating to the pastors and churches how we carry out these commands by our Lord. We are in need of your prayers and finances for this trip and to accomplish these goals.

Time to Update your Mission Board?

IMG_7394
by Joy Steiner

If your church is anything like ours, it is hard to keep our mission board updated.  Hopefully this blog post will help you get the India section of your board updated.

This year for conference I decided to print pictures from our church planters in India and  made them into packs that each church could take.  Quite a few churches took a pack and I wanted to give this opportunity to all the churches who weren’t able to have someone at conference.  If you would like to receive a pack of pictures, please comment below or send an email to OrrvilleGrace@gmail.com

I also made a prayer card that you can either print yourself using the link below or you can request some and I will mail them to you. (Or if you have someone coming to Camp Christigan next week I can bring them then.)

Thanks for your support of the work in India!
Joy

Update on the Ministries in India and Myanmar : July 2016

Myanmar Ministry Endorsed

Naing & Pam

On June 30th, Brother Naing Bu and his wife, Pam, met with the Foreign Mission Panel of the CGBCI. A written plan was submitted for a joint partnership between the CGBCI and the churches of the Southern Chin Brethren Fellowship in Myanmar to plant churches among tribal people groups in the country of Myanmar. This written plan included a strong commitment on the part of the SCBF to adopt and embrace the CGBCI Statement of Faith as their own. Brother Naing Bu and his wife also agreed to be baptized by trine immersion even though he had already been baptized by trine immersion to demonstrate their understanding of this ordinance and to demonstrate their commitment. Moreover, it will provide a good example to the other Myanmar pastors.

The written plan also includes that pastors Ike Graham and Bryan Maley return to Myanmar in January to teach trine immersion and threefold communion while at the same time demonstrating to the pastors and churches how we carry out these commands by our Lord. Pray for these plans and for God’s good, acceptable and perfect will to be accomplished for His glory alone.

Rajan Family - August 2015

While we were at Conference in KY, Brother Paul sent his greetings to the Conference and also sent the following prayer requests:

  • For the Lord’s strength in the midst of growing opposition and persecution.
  • For the health of the church planters. Some have been experiencing health problems.
  • For the continued effective ministry of the Proclaimer units which read the New Testament in the language of the people.
  • For Gilbert’s continued experience as a medical doctor for the purpose of ministry.

Konnect with the Kids : 2016

Topper - 2016.jpg

Hello,

We are getting ready to start signing people up for Konnect with the Kids ministry for this next year.  Just this morning I received the list of children, their pictures and am in the process of making up all the packets.  We will be having people sign up at conference.  I wanted to give those of you who signed up last year to have a chance to have the same child even if aren’t going to be at conference.  If you would like to be part of this ministry again this year please let me know so I can reserve the child you want.  I am not able to guarantee that “your” child is still at the orphanage, but I will reserve them for you if they are still there.

To see pictures of the current children click, here.

The suggested donation for the gifts is Christmas $20, Clothing $20, School Supplies and Uniform $35.   So the total for 3 gifts would be $75.

If you are interested in being involved again this year, please send an e-mail to OrrvilleGrace@gmail.com with the following information:

-Your first choice of children

-If your first choice is no longer at the orphanage would you still like to be involved?  If so, would you prefer a boy or girl.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

In Christ,
Joy Steiner

Update on the Ministries in India and Myanmar : June 2016

VBS in Tamil Nadu

R.OS. VBS 2.jpg

May is the end of the school year in Tamil Nadu. At both Agape Home and Torbay House, Vacation Bible School (VBS) was held for the children.

Brother Paul reports: The children were divided into three groups according to their ages. Each group had bible lessons, sang songs and did handicraft works. The children also participated in bible quizzing, skits etc. Thank all the donors and sponsors for the children’s ministry as it yields a great impact on the lives of the children and please continue to pray for them.

This is a blessing for the believers and the children in these locations as the government under Prime Minister Modi continues to allow great pressure on Christian ministries and persecution of Christians. More recent stringent regulations regarding orphanages have shut down many. In God’s gracious, providential working, both Agape Home and Torbay House have passed the government inspections and continue to operate.

R.O.S VBS 3

It is exciting to report to you that the Southern Chin Brethren Fellowship of churches in Myanmar have voted to join hands with the CGBCI for the purpose of church planting among tribal groups in Myanmar. Praise the Lord!

As I mentioned in last month’s update, pray for Naing Bu and his wife, Pam, as they plan to be at Conference and share with us this exciting news and give more details. You will have the opportunity to speak to them in person.

As always, we are very grateful for your prayers and financial gifts to the ministry in India. We pray that you may realize what Jesus said in Luke 16:9.

Update on the Ministry in India & Myanmar : May 2016

Prayer requests and Praises:

Pratap Sipka

  • Pray for Pratap Sipka in Golamunda, Odisha. He is suffering from malaria and has been suffering from it for over a month now. Above is a picture of our Brother and his family. He is the older brother of team leader, Peter.
  • Praise the Lord that the government inspections of Agape Home and Torbay house went well.
  • Pray for the new contacts in the mountain region of Sathyamangalam. Pray that more people will be saved and added to the church there.
  • Pray for the outreach to children in the mountain area and also in Odisha.
  • Pray for Simon and Gurucharan in Jharkhand.  They have requested more time to teach their people about trine immersion and threefold communion.
  • Pray for the team in Semala, Odisha as one of the team members, Pitbas Takri, has decided that he no longer wishes to be a part of that church planting team.
  • Pray for the plan to begin self-support status in January. Wisdom and timing is needed for every team member.
  • Pray also for the families and children of the church planters as they gear up to begin a new school year. This means need funds and strength to be a good Christian witness.

Naign Bu & Pam

On a different subject, pray for Naign Bu and his wife, Pam, as they are planning to attend Conference and report on the work in Myanmar. Pray that they can get their visas soon. The Southern Chin Brethren Fellowship is meeting on May 22nd to make a final decision as to whether they will officially join with the CGBCI for church planting
purposes in Myanmar.

As always, we are very grateful for your prayers and financial gifts to the ministry in India. We pray that you may realize what Jesus said in Luke 16:9.
