Update on the Ministry in India : July 2017

New Church Planters

India Update - July 2017

Attending the Conference in Tamil Nadu this past May were 2 men who came to learn more about CGBCIndia.  One of the men, Patrick, has a ministry among tribal people in the hill area of Tamil Nadu. The other man, Jeyaprakash, lives in the area of Kandiyaperri. He wants to be involved in that church planting work. He not only attended the Conference, but also attended the ministry to children there in Kandiyaperri when the U.S. team was there in May. Both of these men, after discussing trine immersion and threefold communion, in addition to the Statement of Faith, with the other church planters have decided to join with us. As a result, they were both baptized by trine immersion on Monday, June 26th, at Agape Home by Brother Munisamy. Pray for these men as they are assimilated into the church planting team in Tamil Nadu. We are excited that more effort is being made to reach tribal people in the area.

With sadness, we also learned during our trip in May that some of the men who had joined the Odisha church planting teams have either given up or are not faithfully carrying out the ministry. Losing men is heart wrenching, but we have confidence in the Lord of the harvest to continue to build His church (Matthew 9:38).

Opposition to Christians in India continues to grow.  There is a bill in their Parliament now to close all Christian orphanages and turn the children over to government care. One group has vowed to rid India of Christians by 2023. In spite of these murderous threats, our Brethren continue to persevere and carefully evangelize. The Dalit caste of people in India continues to respond to the Gospel. May the Lord grant us a great harvest among them.

Our financial support to the church planters for the July-Sept. quarter fell short of our monetary goal. This was the first time in a long time that we fell short. Please consider how you might be able to increase your amount to close the gap in our deficit for these men and their families.

Update on the Ministry in India : June 2017

June Update - MapCoimbatore Conference

This trip, we held two Conferences.  The first was in Coimbatore (state of Tamil Nadu) and the second was for the church planters in Odisha though we met in the city of Vishakhapatnam. At the Conference in Coimbatore, 11 new Christians were baptized and one believer who had not been baptized by trine immersion previously.

When we visited the village of Cholapuram, 4 new Christians were baptized there. Two of them were a young married couple and one was a 65 year old man whose parents were Christians, but he had not been saved. On the next page, you will see a picture of those who were baptized at the Conference in Tamil Nadu. One man is not in the picture because he had to leave for work before the picture was taken.

June update - Baptisms

One of the constant messages that we received was the increasing opposition to Christians and the harassment, even physical abuse that they are subjected to at the hands of Hindu nationalists. So when they heard that the Orrville, Ohio GBC had written a letter to President Trump asking him to impress upon Prime Minister Modi at their meeting in June that the constitution of India guarantees religious freedom, they were very encouraged. Please pray the President Trump will make this an issue with Prime Minister Modi when they meet at the end of June (this month).

At Conference in Laurelville (Mt. Pleasant, PA), we will be sharing more about the trip in May and more about the Conference in Vishakhapatnam. We have a number of pictures and video clips to share. Thank you for your prayers while we were gone as there was some sickness, but the Lord sustained us through your prayers.

Update on the Ministry in India : April 2017

Upcoming Ministry Trip

April Update (1)

The map to the left shows the location of Coimbatore. This is the location for our Conference with the church planting teams in south India.  After our arrival and ministry to the churches in the mountains of Sathyamanagalam, we will participate in the Conference May 9-11. The theme of the Conference is “The Christian Home.” This is the theme requested by the men. While we are in the south, we will also minister to the church in Cholapuram and the outreach point in Kandiyaperri.  Lord willing, this will take place May 12-14. Later, on May 17th, the plan is to fly to Vishakapatnam in the north and meet there with the church planters and their families who are coming from the state of Odisha.  Persecution continues as recently a village stripped a pastor and his wife naked and made them stand in the street for all to see. Activist Hindus want to embarrass, humiliate and intimidate Christians, especially pastors and church planters (John 15:18-20).

On the next map, you can see the location of Vishakapatnam where we will be for the Conference with the men and their families from Odisha.  Yes, I know. The spelling I use is different. Well, that is true of many Hindi words when you transliterate them into English.

April Update (2)

Our trip is registered with the U.S. State Department so that the U.S. Embassy has a record of our presence.  We do this for precautionary measures.  We also have medical insurance for the trip in the event that it is needed. Pray that no one will get malaria.

Pray specifically for…
• Clear and accurate communication.
• Reception of the Word of God (1 Thess. 2:13).
• The team’s health and safety.
• Flight connections, layovers & other red tape.
• Adjustment to the food and climate.
• Souls to be saved, baptized & added to the churches.
• Evaluation & encouragement for the India ministry.
Special thanks to many who have already contributed financially to this trip. Our expenses for the Conferences are more than usual because of holding 2 Conferences in 2 locations. In addition, new laws prohibit us from staying at the orphanages.

Update on the Ministries in India and Myanmar : November 2016

Escalating persecution in India

11/02/2016 Washington, D.C. (International Christian Concern) – International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that four Christians, including an elderly couple and a pregnant woman, were brutally beaten by alleged Hindu radicals in the Bastar District of India’s Chhattisgarh State. Due to injuries sustained during the attack, a 60-year-old Christian man died.

The attack took place on October 8 in Kuther village, located in the Bastar District. According to local Christians contacted by ICC, individuals, suspected by locals to be Hindu radicals, broke into the home of Sularam Kashyap and his pregnant wife, Sudri, and severely beat the Christian couple along with Sularam’s elderly parents. As a result of the attack, all four Christians were hospitalized at the Government District Hospital of Jagdalpur.

While in the hospital, the Christian family was visited by an aid worker who attempted to record the family’s testimony on video. This reportedly upset police from the Lahundiguda Police Station, who ordered the Christian family to leave the hospital and return home on October 15. Due to the severity of his injuries and the lack of proper medical treatment, Sukru Kashyap, Sularam’s 60-year-old father, died at home on October 31.

According to local Christians, the family was attacked because they refused to denounce their Christian faith.  In June 2014, more than 50 villages in the Bastar District, including Kuther, passed resolutions effectively banning the practice of non-Hindu faiths, which the Chhattisgarh High Court later ruled to be unconstitutional. Since June 2014, Hindu radicals have assaulted, threatened, and organized social boycotts against Christians living in the Bastar District, using the debunked resolutions to justify their actions.

As a part of the social boycott against Christians in Kuther village, local Hindus blocked Sularam from burying his father in the village’s graveyard on October 31. On November 1, Sularam was able to bury his father in the village graveyard, but only after police intervention.

William Stark, ICC’s Regional Manager, said, “The persecution of Christians in the Bastar District continues to shock the conscience. Assaults and threats have become almost commonplace over the past two years.  In many villages where social boycotts are taking place, Christians are not allowed to collect water from village wells, cultivate their fields, or engage in commerce. They are fined if they talk to a Hindu and are even barred from burying their dead. This siege-like persecution has one purpose: to drive out Christianity. It’s shocking that this situation has been allowed to continue, especially since Article 25 of India’s constitution provides full religious freedom to its citizens. Without enforcement, the right this article enshrines is simply words on paper.”

Please pray for our Brethren in India who face this kind of persecution. Pray for them to stand strong; to be bold in their witness and even to death to proclaim that Jesus is Lord. Thank you for praying and for supporting this ministry.

Time to Update your Mission Board?

IMG_7394
by Joy Steiner

If your church is anything like ours, it is hard to keep our mission board updated.  Hopefully this blog post will help you get the India section of your board updated.

This year for conference I decided to print pictures from our church planters in India and  made them into packs that each church could take.  Quite a few churches took a pack and I wanted to give this opportunity to all the churches who weren’t able to have someone at conference.  If you would like to receive a pack of pictures, please comment below or send an email to OrrvilleGrace@gmail.com

I also made a prayer card that you can either print yourself using the link below or you can request some and I will mail them to you. (Or if you have someone coming to Camp Christigan next week I can bring them then.)

Thanks for your support of the work in India!
Joy

Update on the Ministries in India and Myanmar : June 2016

VBS in Tamil Nadu

R.OS. VBS 2.jpg

May is the end of the school year in Tamil Nadu. At both Agape Home and Torbay House, Vacation Bible School (VBS) was held for the children.

Brother Paul reports: The children were divided into three groups according to their ages. Each group had bible lessons, sang songs and did handicraft works. The children also participated in bible quizzing, skits etc. Thank all the donors and sponsors for the children’s ministry as it yields a great impact on the lives of the children and please continue to pray for them.

This is a blessing for the believers and the children in these locations as the government under Prime Minister Modi continues to allow great pressure on Christian ministries and persecution of Christians. More recent stringent regulations regarding orphanages have shut down many. In God’s gracious, providential working, both Agape Home and Torbay House have passed the government inspections and continue to operate.

R.O.S VBS 3

It is exciting to report to you that the Southern Chin Brethren Fellowship of churches in Myanmar have voted to join hands with the CGBCI for the purpose of church planting among tribal groups in Myanmar. Praise the Lord!

As I mentioned in last month’s update, pray for Naing Bu and his wife, Pam, as they plan to be at Conference and share with us this exciting news and give more details. You will have the opportunity to speak to them in person.

As always, we are very grateful for your prayers and financial gifts to the ministry in India. We pray that you may realize what Jesus said in Luke 16:9.

Update on the Ministry in India – March 2016

March 2016 (1)

Baptisms!

This is a picture of Brother Ruben. He, along with 2 women, were baptized by trine immersion on Sunday, March 5th. The ladies were Poongodi and Thangamani.  Ruben is one of the 3 leaders helping to plant a church in the mountain area of Sathyamangalam with Brothers Stephen and Velusamy.

Those who were baptized also participated in 3-fold communion that day with the other believers at Agape Home in Coimbatore. Afterwards, the church planters had a meeting during which they discussed:

  1. The printing of new tracts in Tamil and their distribution. They also discussed distributing other Gospel booklets and some small books.
  2. To divide the Conference of 2017 into one in Tamil Nadu and the other at Vishakapatnum for the believers in Odisha.
  3. For the church planters of Tamil Nadu to meet once a quarter for fellowship and to rotate the location.
  4. We will work on repairing buildings in Sathyamangalam and Pongalur for ministry and a place to worship.

Please pray for us in Coimbatore to find a suitable location to build a church building soon. The government will not allow a church to meet at Agape Home and neither will they allow anyone to stay there or for us to hold our Conferences there anymore.

Brother Paul was awarded a Ph.D. on March 3rd by Anna University in Chennai for Electrical Engineering. Rejoice with him in this milestone in his life. Lord willing, he will join us for Conference and to see the Ark this summer.

Update on the Ministry in India : January 2016

Updates and prayer requests:

Recently, Brother Paul sent the followiLokhantha Tandi IMG_2588ng updates and prayer
requests: Please pray for brother Lognath Tandi (in picture below) in Golamunda. He is seriously affected by a stroke recently and was admitted to a hospital. He is struggling physically. Prayers are needed much for him. Also pray for brother David Hanu in Umarkote. His infant daughter is not well.

Brother Paul also mentioned that he is praying for our Bible teaching trip to Myanmar. We are scheduled to leave this Saturday, January 16, 2016. By way of reminder, we were invited by a Plymouth Brethren pastor who was studying here in the U.S. to come and teach their Fellowship elders Grace Brethren distinctives. We will be in Myanmar preaching and teaching January 19-30, 2016. If you have not received a prayer card, like the one below, you may request it from Joy Steiner at orrvillegrace@gmail.com You can also call her at 330-683-3526.

front-small

Please pray for us. Here are some of our requests:

  • For safe travel and good health there and back.
  • For the men who hear the truth to be drawn to a conviction about Grace Brethren distinctives because they are biblical and not for other reasons.
  • For the interpreter(s) to understand well and convey accurately the biblical truths that we will be teaching.
  • For every listener to understand the truth well and not read into what is being taught.
  • For an agreement to partner together in order to plant churches in Myanmar; especially among tribal groups which have no Gospel witness.

In last month’s India ministry update, you were informed of a financial goal deficit that we were facing for this quarter. Praise the Lord that many of you responded and, except for the orphan ministry, all financial goals were met for this quarter. Thank you so much!

Myanmar Trip – Prayer Requests

Pastor Ike, Josh Miller and Pastor Bryan Maley have their visas and are preparing to leave for Myanmar on January 16th. Please pray…

  • For good health and stamina there and back
  • For smooth transitions from one place to another
  • For clarity in communicating the word of God through the interpreter
  • For good understanding on the part of the listeners
  • For a desire on the part of the national brethren to join us because the word of God is their motivation; not because we are Americans or have more money than they do (as they think).

For a good strategy, then, to reach unreached areas and plant solid, biblical churches.

Update on the Ministry in India : December 2015

Leadership Meeting

2015 Leadership Meeting

The team leaders from Tamil Nadu, Odisha and Jharkhand met in Coimbatore on Saturday, November 28th to pray concerning their ministries in their respective areas and to address concerns of false allegations as well as to plan for future outreach. Out of that meeting a number of prayer requests and praises have emerged. They are as follows:

  • Praise the Lord for the salvation of souls in the areas of Odisha, Pondicherry, Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu. Please pray for these new believers.
  • Praise the Lord for the salvation of Vellaiyammal. She is one of the tribal people in the forest area of Sathyamangalam outside of Coimbatore. Paul and Moses visited this place and started a prayer group in this Hindu dominated area. Vellaiyammal came for prayer. She was suffering with much pain in her body and requested prayer. God answered their prayers and healed her! She then believed in the Lord Jesus and is now preparing for baptism. This is the first fruit of souls since Pastor Ike Graham and team visited this area back in May. A number of people have been coming to the Sunday worship now. Pray that the Lord will grant us a building to meet in.
  • Pray for Joseph Suriya. He is the team leader in Umarkote, Odisha. He is in the back on the far right in the picture. He has been losing weight and suffering from high blood pressure and the doctors do not know why.
  • Praise the Lord that 3 new families have been added to the church in Cholapuram (Brother David – far left rear in picture) and 30 children are attending Sunday school.
  • A praise and prayer is for the Bible study being led by PK Moses in Coimbatore. About 30-35 college students and 10 faculty are attending his Bible study on Thursdays. Most of them are not Christians. Pray for the salvation of souls and adding them to the church.
  • Peter and Pratap request prayer for their mother who is suffering from kidney problems.

Pastor Steve Burns has informed me that we are $5,100 short of reaching our financial goal for the ministry in India for the 4th quarter of 2015. Please consider a special Christmas gift to the ministry in India during this Christmas season.

Thank you for your prayers and financial support. Financial support can be sent to:

Special Prayer Request from Brother Paul:

“This is a special prayer request for our people living in Chennai and Pondicherry areas, because of the continuous heavy rain the Chennai city is floating in flood as the water covered the houses up to the second floor.  Thousands lost their home and clothing, household appliances striving for  food, water and shelter.  The union Govt declared this flood as the National Disaster and the Chennai city got such a heavy rain after 100 years.  The weather forecast tells that there will be heavy rain for another three days at Chennai and the city is completely isolated form other parts by road, rail and air.  The airport is closed for another two days as the flood entered into the run way .  No electricity and phone connection and public holiday is declared for all the institutions and industries.  Life boats are used to save the people and the military is in full swing in saving the people.  We have watched the television and heard the tearful stories of the people living on the streets.  Can you please pass on this prayer request to all the churches there?
